Since I've already brought this blog back from the dead, it's best to give out a new introduction. This was originally from my Wordpress site, but I got bored of that one. So now I'm here once again.
"Scarlett Medine is ambitious, thoughtful, sincere, and occasionally off her rocker. She has a habit of obsessively researching whatever interests her at the moment, then dropping it cold once she's mastered it. Though she's a self-proclaimed recluse, she finds conversations with close friends quite entertaining (especially if she can fire off well-timed witticisms).
One day, Scarlett dreams to be a published poet. For now, she's living out each day planning out the steps for that to become a reality. But she has to admit: writer's block is a bastard. She also hopes to crank out a few more words between her busy schedule.
Also known as S. Medine, she spends her time glued to her laptop, researching more about MBTI and Enneagram, trying (and failing) fighting moves in her space, and making sets on her Polyvore. Currently, she's also focused on locking in the next phase of her life plan."
So I'm finally going to revive this blog and rave over this unbelievable opening. This means that I'll replay it 60+ times, squeal incessantly, then analyze it to death. Tomorrow can't come soon enough. Too bad I'm a broke plebeian who can't have life's pleasures.
All right, on to the first impressions. RWBY's animation is so evolved now; at first glance, it's like a full-fledged anime. And that can be a subjectively good or bad thing. On one hand, the characters, creatures, and scenery are much more detailed; there's less room for any discernible errors and glitches (like the shadow people back in Volume 1!). Overall, the new style is brighter and more effusive. On the other hand, the fights in this opening seem slower, less intense, and forgettable. These are the parts RWBY nails the most. You get immersed into the very battle that's occurring. I always find myself replaying many of their fights because of that reason. However, this is probably just how the opening portrays them, so it may change when the first episode rolls in.
Next is the new OP, "Let's Just Live." It's less ramped-up, fiery, more contemplative than the other ones in the past. Looking at some of the lyrics, "Let's Just Live" is a song that faces disillusionment and coming to terms with tragedy. It's accepting what life throws at you, so this is where the OP feels more optimistic and resilient in tone. Personally, I have mixed feelings about this song. I'd have to listen to it in its entirety for the beat to really sink in.
And oh god...the characters. We got Ruby, teamed up with JNPR to form JNRR (or RNJR, whichever one's cooler.) Weiss is back under her father's thumb, sharpening her summoning powers - with some dire emotional effects. Blake and Sun are together at Menagerie, and there's a first look at Blake's parents! Meanwhile, Yang is reeling over the psychological trauma of losing her arm. (Seriously. Screw you, Adam.)
Of course, there's also the return of Cinder and Salem. The former has really taken a beating from her defeat in Ruby's hands. Her hair's covering a clear scar, so she may have been blinded or lost an eye. And I'm looking forward to how Salem's plans for world domination will unfold, her underlying motivations, and who she really is. Although, where are Mercury, Emerald, and Neo? Let's just hope they do make a reappearance, because Salem's other cronies straddle on the stereotypical. The Bruiser, Authoritarian, and Psychopath. But I'm willing to bet that the Psychopath is related to Cinder. Same hair and eye color. Coincidence? I think not.
Can you see that I'm hyped-up for this premiere? I promise that the next review won't ramble on like this one did.
Well, this post was a lot longer than I intended it to be. I'll just turn in with some icy water, wrap myself up in a dozen blankets (the woes of October weather), and maybe forum hop for a bit. Until next time, everyone!
